MOT check: history, due date and a free reminder

Check the MOT history and due date of any UK vehicle with its registration, then get a free MOT reminder by email before it runs out.

100% free. Cars, motorcycles and vans in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

How the MOT check and reminder work

  1. 01

    Enter the registration

Any car, motorcycle or van registered in Great Britain or Northern Ireland.

  2. 02

    See the MOT history

Expiry date, every pass and fail since 2005, recorded mileage and advisories, from DVSA records.

  3. 03

    Get a free reminder

One email about 30 days before the MOT runs out, and optionally another a week before. Just your email address, no account.

Check your MOT due date, then stop worrying about it

The MOT expiry date is on the certificate, and easy to forget until the day it has gone. Look up your registration, see exactly when it runs out, and let a free MOT reminder do the remembering. It also works as an MOT history check before you buy: you can see every pass and fail, the mileage at each test and what the testers advised.

MOT questions

How do I check when my MOT is due?

Enter the registration number above. Moterno shows the MOT expiry date from DVSA's MOT history records, together with past tests, mileage and advisories. The official service at gov.uk shows the same underlying records.

Is the MOT reminder really free?

Yes. The reminder is 100% free: no card, no trial and no account. You only give your email address. Moterno Premium exists, but it is optional and not needed for the reminder.

How many emails will I get?

First one email to confirm your address, then a reminder about 30 days before the MOT expires, and a second one a week before if you ask for it. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.

When does a new car need its first MOT?

In Great Britain a car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration. In Northern Ireland private cars are first tested at four years. Some vehicle types, such as taxis and ambulances, are tested earlier.

How early can I get my MOT done?

You can have the MOT done up to a month (minus a day) before it expires and keep the same renewal date. If you test earlier than that, the new certificate runs from the date of the test.

What happens if my MOT runs out?

You can't legally drive or park on a public road with an expired MOT, except when driving to a pre-booked MOT test or to a place for repairs after a failed one. You can be fined up to 1,000 pounds.

What does an MOT history check show?

For each test since 2005 in Great Britain (2017 in Northern Ireland): the date, pass or fail, the mileage recorded, and any advisories, minor, major or dangerous defects. It is useful before buying a used vehicle, to spot a clocked odometer or a recurring problem.

Where does the data come from?

From the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) MOT history service, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Moterno is not part of the government and the data is shown as DVSA holds it.

Moterno is more than a reminder: a free garage with your vehicle's history, clubs and meets, registries and a marketplace. What is Moterno?

MOT data from DVSA, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Moterno is not affiliated with DVSA or DVLA.
